Year 4 and the water cycle…
As part of our states of matter topic we have been looking at the water cycle. We made our very own so we can see it in action too!

Year 4 are looking at states of matter. We looked at a thermometer and investigated the temperature of different objects and areas in the classroom. We then looked at chocolate, ice cream, butter and a jelly sweet and used what we’d learned to predict which would melt first. We made tin foil boats for our substances and Mrs Smith added 300ml of hot water
We have been so excited in school this week as we had some mystery eggs arrive! We have been investigating the eggs and learnt they were duck eggs! We have been keeping a close eye on the eggs and have loved watching them wiggle and hatch. We have named our ducks Stripy, Shadow and Cooly, we love to watch them grow and have impressed
We started our fractions work looking at how the denominator may be a larger number but the fraction is actually smaller because it has been cut into more equal parts. What better way to actually see this than with cake! Then we got to eat it after doing our work!
Solids, liquids and gases can be really hard to understand but year 4 smashed it when we acted as particles! In a solid we were tightly packed. In a liquid we were close but not as close as a solid. When we were a gas we weren’t close together at all but could spread out and fill the room-we certainly inderstand how the particles
Miss Thexton came to Mrs Smith’s literacy group so we could persuade her to give KS2 an afternoon break like they have in KS1. This was a lovely hook into our discussion topic writing and the children were so amazing that we earned a one off break!
Yesterday we had a visit from Sab who works for the Science Institution came to school to show us some amazing things all about food. She taught us about our taste buds, different flavours, some amazing science vocabulary and even set some flour on fire!
Dignity Funeral Directors set a colouring competition for our children to enter.
Year 1 were invited to attend an English session with Monkwearmouth Academy, and had so much fun! Together with the Year 11 children they read stories, created characters from the story and even went on a secret word hunt using invisible ink!
