Welcome to History at Southwick Community Primary School!
Our aim here at Southwick is to engage our pupils with a relevant, exciting and challenging History curriculum which inspires children’s curiosity and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past. Children investigate these past events and, by so doing, develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem-solving. Our pupils develop an understanding of how events in the past have influenced our lives today preparing them for an adult life in the 21st century.
We encourage visits to places of historical interest and also visitors in school to help ignite children’s curiosity about the past and to help secure a greater depth of understanding. Remember to check our year group and curriculum pages regularly to see what your children have been up to!
At Southwick, we follow the Essentials Curriculum. In history, there are four main ‘Threshold Concepts’. These are the big ideas that underpin the teaching and learning in history.
The four threshold concepts in history are:
• Investigate and interpret the past – This concept involves recognising that our understanding of the past comes from an interpretation of the available evidence.
• Build an overview of world history – This concept involves an appreciation of the characteristic features of the past and that these features are similar and different across time periods, and an understanding that life is different for different sections of society.
• Understand chronology – This concept involves an understanding of how to chart the passing of time and how some aspects of history happened at similar times in different places.
• Communicate historically – This concept involves using historical vocabulary and techniques to convey information about the past.
