Do you know that Primary School Children spend 1.4 years of their life playing?
We are committed to continuously improving our outdoor area, to ensure it is an area where children have the opportunity to continuously learn and play throughout their time at Southwick Primary School.
Changing the way we play will have a positive impact on behavioural issues and will support children’s development, learning and how they manage risks.
W need your help to continue to improve our outdoor areas. We are running an incentive across the school to collect the following items, the first year group to complete their bingo card will win golden time outside.
Young Tree Champions
We took delivery of our 5 broadleaf trees and 60 hedge whips in January 2025. Prior to this, we were contacted by ATW Tree and Landscaping Specialists Ltd, who very kindly offered to help us plant the trees and hedge whips. A group of year 1 and year 4 children thoroughly enjoyed learning for to plant the trees and hedge whip over a period of two days.
They have all been planted across the boundary lines of the field, and we cannot wait to begin to watch them grow and care for them. The gardeners from ATW taught us how to protect the trees from wildlife and ensure we give the trees the best possible start, they were a fantastic support and even kindly donated protective covers for the trees and lots of logs which we are going to use to replace the seating in our firepit area and cut the smaller ones to make some new outdoors games!

Outdoor Learning Day 2024
We had a lot of fun taking our learning outside as part of Outdoor Learning Day. The HUB love to play in the outdoors, making their own learning with rain water and the natural resources. Nursery children enjoyed exploring Bonfire Night using chalk to create their own fireworks and exploring their senses of seeing, hearing and smelling the fireworks. Reception used large scale construction material to create their own ships, having lots of fun singing the song ‘The Big Ship Sails’ and exploring the different shapes and construction materials. In Key Stage One , year 1 took their Design Technology lessons outside creating bridges out of the construction equipment and year 2 took Maths outside creating part whole models using chalk. In History year 3 have been learning about Cave drawings and this was a perfect opportunity for the children to have a go creating their own on the school walls. In Year 4 the children took Maths outside using natural resources to complete multiplication calculations, and using the 100 square to practice times table recall. Year 5 have been learning about symmetry and they looked around the playground for examples of symmetry, even creating their own shapes in the snow! Finally in year 6 children used their senses during English to explore the surrounding area writing alliterations to describe what they could see and hear.
Year 4 Outdoor Learning…
Year 4 used the outdoor area today to use our teamwork skills and creative skills to make a boat with the outdoor resources. We also used the fire pit to toast marshmallows and we made sure we followed the fire safety rules too-we had a great time!
As you can see the outdoor are is a fantastic learning opportunity for any lessons, the teachers and children alike had a lot of fun. Take a look at us in action below.
